State Water Heater Error Codes

Look up what a blink or error code means on your State water heater, and whether it is safe to check yourself.

This table covers the standard atmospheric GPX, GS6, and GSX 300 and 301 models only. State's power vent, direct vent, and electric water heaters are not covered here.

State residential FVIR standard atmospheric gas water heaters (GPX, GS6, GSX Series 300/301) with Honeywell gas control valve/thermostat

CodeSeverityWhat it meansSafe checks
0 flashes (LED not lit)DIY OK

The control is off, or the pilot is out.

A homeowner can retry the lighting procedure on the label. If the pilot lights but does not hold, or will not light at all, that points to a tripped thermal switch, igniter, or gas supply issue a technician should check.

1 safe check
  • Follow the lighting instructions on the water heater's label and confirm the pilot is lit by looking through the viewport
Status light on (solid)Normal

The pilot light was recently extinguished and the thermopile is cooling down.

No repair needed. This is expected after the pilot goes out or the control is turned off.

1 safe check
  • Wait about 10 minutes for the thermopile to cool, then relight the pilot following the label instructions
1 flashNormal

Normal operation (a bright and dim heartbeat pattern).

No corrective action necessary.

None needed
2 flashesPro required

Thermopile voltage is low.

If reseating the connectors does not resolve it, a technician needs to measure the thermopile's millivolt output and replace the thermopile if it reads below 350 millivolts DC.

1 safe check
  • Check that wiring connectors at the gas control are snapped on fully and not loose or damaged
4 flashesSafety hazard

Temperature exceeded (the ECO, or Energy Cut-Off, safety device activated).

This is an overheat safety shutdown. The gas control valve/thermostat needs to be replaced by a technician. Do not attempt to reset or continue using it yourself.

2 safe checks
  • Turn the gas control valve/thermostat knob to OFF
  • Turn the main gas supply off
5 flashesPro required

Sensor failure.

The gas control valve/thermostat needs replacement by a technician.

2 safe checks
  • Turn the gas control valve/thermostat knob to OFF
  • Turn the main gas supply off
7 flashesPro required

Internal control failure.

The gas control valve/thermostat needs replacement by a technician.

2 safe checks
  • Turn the gas control valve/thermostat knob to OFF
  • Turn the main gas supply off
8 flashesSafety hazard

Power off failure. The control knob is set to OFF, but the pilot flame may still be present.

If the pilot flame is present with the knob in the OFF position, that means the valve is not shutting off gas correctly, a safety issue: the gas control valve/thermostat needs professional replacement. If no pilot flame is present, wait 10 minutes for the thermopile to cool, then relight the unit per the label; if the code returns, the valve needs professional replacement.

1 safe check
  • Confirm the gas control knob is set to OFF
